  • Spellings

At Hulland Church of England Primary School, we use the No Nonsense Spelling Programme, which follows the National Curriculum and teaches spelling rules, patterns and key words in a fun and engaging way. Lessons are short and frequent, helping children remember and apply what they learn.

Key Stage 2 will have 3 spelling lessons a week (20–30 mins each).
    Each week follows a pattern:

Teach – learn the rule and word meanings
Practice – explore spellings through activities
Apply – use the words in context

Pupils will receive all their spellings for the half-term during the first week (see the link below). There are no weekly tests. Instead, pupils will be assessed at the end of the half-term on spelling and word meaning. Research shows that weekly tests don’t help children retain spellings long-term. Our new method gives pupils more meaningful exposure to words so they can use them confidently in their writing.

How can you help at home?
Regular revision of spellings at home will support retention and boost writing skills. Click on the document 'Spelling Strategies' below to see the different ways pupils can engage with their spellings. Be as creative as possible!
